Organic food is thought of as a healthier option and is widely popular nowadays. However, it also tends to be more expensive than non-organic food. The natural question is: is it worth it?

Is ‘Organic’ the Same as ‘Natural’?

Organic foods are natural foods. However, that doesn’t also mean that natural foods are organic. 

Organic foods are foods that meet additional standards in terms of how they are grown and produced, namely in compliance with organic farming methods. Organic food is also referred to as ecological (eco) or biological (bio) food. 

Natural foods, on the other hand, are referred to as ‘natural’ because they contain no preservatives or artificial colours or flavours. 

Both natural and organic foods are considered healthy. Organic foods are considered healthier because they are grown and produced according to stricter guidelines and certified for compliance while natural foods are not required to meet as many standards. 

Last but not least, non-organic foods are defined as foods that are not grown or produced using natural methods and that have less than 70% organic components.

1️⃣ Organic also means more expensive

While it is true that organic products are generally more expensive than non-organic products that are cheaper to produce, you can still find plenty of ways to source cheaper organic fruits, vegetables, and animal products. For instance, farmers’ markets and local markets or roadside stands are ideal sources of organic food where you can find these products at the same price or even a fraction of the cost of conventional foods.

2️⃣ Organic food is automatically healthier 

Because organic food is not exposed to herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers, it is a healthier choice. Choosing these foods means you avoid having your body absorb those chemicals. However, when it comes to their nutritional value, organic and non-organic foods are not that different. 

3️⃣ Organic products are not exposed to herbicides or pesticides

Organic foods are not grown using herbicides and pesticides. However, they are not all 100% organic. Hence, the different labels you will see. ‘100% organic’ is a label you will only see on foods that contain only organic ingredients. If the label does not say 100%, then those foods are 95-99% organic. If the label says ‘made with organic ingredients, then those foods contain 70-94% organic components. 

4️⃣ Organic food helps protect the environment

Not using chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides is definitely better for the environment. On top of this, organic farming also has strict standards on crop rotation and leaves the land uncultivated periodically. In terms of production and distribution, there are not many differences between organic vs. non-organic foods.

5️⃣ If a product is labelled organic, its purity is guaranteed

While organic farming regulations are strict and organic farms are checked once a year by a third party to certify their produce is organic, no one checks each carrot or kale before it reaches the shelves so ‘guaranteed’ is an overstatement.
